Spring Branch ISD Online Registration Begins April 5

Educators Nationwide Concerned About COVID Learning Loss

Online registration for new students to attend Spring Branch ISD schools next fall begins one week from today, and the district is urging families to sign up early as educators nationwide raise concerns about learning loss due to COVID-19.

About 79 percent of Spring Branch students are currently attending classes in person, one of the highest in-person learning rates of any school district. As COVID-19 vaccinations increase sharply across Texas and around the nation, officials hope to see most if not all Spring Branch students back on campus when the 2021-22 school year begins August 16.

“As we move into the final nine-week grading period of this school year, it’s time to start getting ready for the next year,” Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Blaine said. “We are expecting to have a great, healthy school year next year and we are urging our families new to the district to start registering their children.” Texas Commissioner of Education Mike Morath told the Senate Committee on Education recently that recovering from the COVID impact on learning could take four to five years. Registration at Spring Branch ISD is already open for pre-Kindergarten classes for all eligible students.

Spring Branch ISD offers full-day programs for four-year old’s and half-day classes for three-year old’s. Some families may qualify to attend for free if they meet certain Texas Education Agency criteria such as limited English proficiency or are economically disadvantaged, homeless, part of a military family or in foster care.

Pre-Kindergarten has been proven to result in students having higher IQ scores and increased vocabulary, and a higher likelihood of enrolling in and graduating college. “Those early years, pre-Kindergarten to second grade, are absolutely the most critical years in the development of children as lifelong learners with great opportunities for success. We are urging Spring Branch parents to enroll their children in pre-K to spark that love of learning,” Dr. Blaine said.

With strong health and safety protocols in place, Spring Branch ISD operated schools with in-person and virtual classes throughout the 2020-21 school year without having to close any schools because of COVID-19. Safety will remain a top priority for the 2021-22 school year. “Our teachers are highly trained and are committed to preparing Every Child to be T-2-4 ready at graduation,” Dr. Blaine said, referring to the Spring Branch ISD goal of preparing every student to graduate ready to attain a technical certificate, military training, or a two-year or four-year college degree. “Our curriculum is top-notch, and you can get the same quality of education across the board at each of our schools,” Dr. Blaine said.
