Spring Branch ISD (SBISD) Leads Houston Area in Achievement on Multiple Measures

SBISD is celebrating outstanding student performance in grades 3 and 8, with the district emerging as a leader in both reading and math.

According to the Good Reason Houston data dashboard, based on STAAR and other results from 2023, SBISD students are significantly outperforming local and state averages, particularly in third-grade reading and eighth-grade math—two key indicators of college readiness.

In third grade, SBISD students met or exceeded grade-level expectations in reading, a remarkable 11 percentage points higher than the state average and 14 percentage points above the Houston-area average. This impressive lead places SBISD at the top of the region and underscores the district's commitment to setting students on a strong path for future academic success, particularly in these formative early years.

It’s not just reading where SBISD students are excelling. The district is also leading in math, particularly in eighth grade.

According to the STAAR data, SBISD eighth graders met or exceeded grade-level expectations in math, leading the state average by 16 percentage points and the Houston-area average by an impressive 26 percentage points.

This shows that SBISD is not only keeping up with the state in reading but also outpacing the region in math, demonstrating well-rounded academic strength.

To understand what it means when students "meet" or "exceed" expectations on the STAAR test, it’s important to know what these performance categories mean. The two highest levels, Masters and Meets Grade Level, indicate that students are well-prepared for the next grade-level and are ready to succeed. Both correlate to college readiness.

Additionally, both categories show that students have more than just passed the test. They are on track for continuous high achievement.

"We are incredibly proud of these results, which clearly show that our students are not just meeting expectations but are truly college-ready," said Dr. Jennifer Blaine, superintendent of SBISD. "To rank at the top in both reading and math, both locally and statewide, is a remarkable achievement that highlights the strong academic foundation we are building.”

SBISD also saw impressive results in other areas, including kindergarten readiness. SBISD students are 15.6 points above the state average and 16.5 points above the Houston-area average in readiness for kindergarten. This demonstrates that the district’s early childhood programs are effectively equipping students for a strong start to their education.

At the high school level, SBISD continues to excel. In Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) exams, SBISD students scored above the expected college-readiness level, 6.6 points above the state average and 15.2 points above the Houston region’s average.

SBISD confirms these trends of high achievement and No. 1 rankings continue based on the district's review of Spring 2024 regional and state data. SBISD remains the top public school district in the Houston area, serving #EveryChild.

“As we celebrate these achievements, we are grateful for the hard work and dedication of our students and teachers. Their commitment to excellence is the driving force behind these successes,” said Dr. Blaine.
