SBISD Students Thrive at Rice Tapia STEM Camp with Support from ExxonMobil

Fifteen emergent bilingual students from Spring Branch ISD (SBISD) recently experienced a week of inspiration, innovation, and personal growth at the prestigious Rice Tapia STEM Camp, held July 13–18 on the campus of Rice University.

This opportunity was made possible through the generous support of ExxonMobil, a key partner in expanding STEM education access for students.

Students were selected from Spring Woods Middle School, Spring Oaks Middle School, Northbrook Middle School, Landrum Middle School, and Northbrook High School, with selection priority given to those actively participating in their school’s after-school STEM programs.

As part of the week-long residential camp, students lived in university dorms and immersed themselves in the college experience. Their days were packed with engaging STEM courses, collaborative problem-solving activities, and hands-on challenges alongside peers from across the country.

Evenings offered enriching and confidence-building campus events, including a talent show that allowed students to express their creativity and connect with others in fun and meaningful ways.

The week concluded with a special trip to NASA, followed by final student presentations judged by a panel of ExxonMobil volunteers. These projects served as a culminating moment—demonstrating each team’s understanding of complex STEM topics like carbon capture and storage (CCS), as well as their communication and teamwork skills developed throughout the camp.

Spring Branch ISD is proud to announce that four district students were recognized for excellence in their final group project, “Carbon Class”:

  • Angel Aviles – Northbrook Middle School
  • Freyman Cifuentes – Northbrook Middle School
  • Anyelo Cortes – Northbrook High School
  • Samantha Torres – Spring Woods Middle School

An awards ceremony and luncheon held at Rice University marked the end of the camp, bringing together families and educators to celebrate student accomplishments. One parent captured the spirit of the week with a heartfelt comment: “When I asked my son if he was having fun, he said, ‘Yes, Mom. Thank you for making me come!’”

This unforgettable experience not only deepened students’ interest in STEM but also boosted their confidence and helped them envision a future in higher education.

SBISD remains committed to supporting programs that inspire, empower, and elevate students through real-world learning opportunities and strong community partnerships.
