Spring Woods High School (SWHS) recently celebrated Jairo Martinez on spring Signing Day as he signed his letter of intent to play football at Houston Christian University (HCU) while his classmates, friends, family and coaches cheered him on. Martinez is the first Division 1 signee for SWHS in 16 years.
“He is a great kid to be around,” Spring Woods Campus Athletic Director and football coach Keith Cripps said. “He works hard, cares about the players on the team and he is an excellent student in the classroom. Once HCU puts weight on him and he has another year in the weight room, he will be a contributing player on their team.”
The opportunity to participate in collegiate sports is a great achievement. Students must have good academic standing, leadership skills and exceptional sportsmanship. Martinez overcame adversity at a young age and truly represents the SBISD Core Characteristics of a T-2-4-ready graduate, Persistent and Adaptable.
“Jairo came to Spring Woods High School along with his two sisters after his mom died unexpectedly,” Cripps said. “Jairo called his uncle, and he picked them up and brought them here. He has played basketball and football at Spring Woods for the last four years.”
SBISD builds on the strengths and gifts of Every Child and is dedicated to ensuring they achieve T-2-4 success. Signing Day strengthens this vision and highlights that our graduates are reaching their potential.
Congratulations to Jairo Martinez!
