Spring Woods High School’s Brisa Leon steps out of comfort zone and joins NJROTC, becomes high-ranking cadet

As a freshman, Brisa Leon was eager to find her place at Spring Woods High School. After seeing the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) marching, Brisa knew that’s where she belonged.

“I joined the NJROTC program as a freshman and while I was excited, I was also scared because it was all so new to me,” said Brisa. “I refrained from participating out of fear that I would do something wrong. But as the days went by, I received much encouragement from my peers and realized there was nothing to be afraid of.”

Brisa notes that the experience has helped her understand that mistakes will be made but as long as we correct them and move on from them, everything will turn out well.

The NJROTC program allowed Brisa to acquire leadership, responsibility and integrity skills. As a junior, she has been in the program for three years and is now the Company Cadet Senior Chief, and the sixth-highest-ranked cadet in the 101 Cadet program.

NJROTC is a Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathway that emphasizes citizenship and leadership development. It is taught by retired Navy Marine Corps, Coast Guard officers and enlisted personnel.

CTE connects students’ academic and technical education to the world of work and helps students reach SBISD’s T-2-4 vision, where every graduate attains a technical certificate, military training or a two-year or four-year degree.

In her role, Brisa oversees over 100 cadets and ensures they properly integrate and learn the basics of the program.

“I have enjoyed watching Brisa transform from a shy first-year cadet into the cadet leader she is today,” Senior Naval Science Instructor Commander Jerry Coufal said. “She has embraced the leadership skills taught and opportunities provided by the NJROTC program and pushed herself out of her comfort zone, gaining confidence with the success she has experienced thus far.”

While in NJROTC, Brisa has participated in various competitions, including orienteering at Stubblefield Lake Recreation Area, Sam Houston National Forest and W. Goodrich Jones State Forest. Additionally, she has taken part in armed and unarmed drills and physical fitness-focused competitions.

Last summer, she participated in the Basic Leadership Training camp held in the Sam Houston State University Outdoor Education Facility and was named Honor Cadet of her platoon.

“I have no doubt Brisa will lead our NJROTC cadets to bigger and better things this year and next,” added Commander Coufal.

Brisa encourages others to join NJROTC. She notes that the program offers a variety of skills that will be useful later in life.

“It may be scary in the beginning, but we will make sure you feel safe and comfortable,” added Brisa. “NJROTC is not only for those looking to join the military. We learn about a wide variety of things, including ships, history and important events. The program is here to help you become who you want to be!”
