Statement from Spring Branch ISD on Health and Safety plan, Harris County order regarding masks

The Spring Branch Independent School District has a Health and Safety plan in place for the 2021-22 school year, which starts on Monday, Aug. 16. Our Health and Safety plan continues to include an option, but not a mandate, for students, staff and visitors to wear masks on campus.

On August 12, 2021, the Harris County local health authority issued an order regarding COVID-19 protocols for public schools located in Harris county. That order is in conflict with GA 38, an executive order by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott which prohibits school districts from issuing mask mandates.

A lawsuit is pending in Harris County that will determine which order takes precedence. Until this conflict is resolved through the courts, Spring Branch ISD will continue with our current school reopening plan, which includes an option for students and staff to wear masks. We also continue to remind students, staff and parents that CDC guidelines recommend that everyone ages 2 and older wear a mask on campus. Our Health and Safety plan can be found here www.springbranchisd.com.

We are monitoring the status of pending legal actions and will update parents and students, staff and our community if our protocols are expected to change. We appreciate the efforts of our staff and community in helping ensure we provide a safe learning environment.
