Statement from Spring Branch ISD regarding masks

The Spring Branch Independent School District was informed that Gov. Greg Abbott issued an executive order today prohibiting governmental entities from requiring masks. The order allows public schools to continue to follow current mask guidelines through June 4.

Masks are currently required to be worn in all Spring Branch ISD schools. The SBISD administration had planned to recommend to the Board of Trustees that masks be made optional beginning June 1.

On Monday night, May 24, the board will hold its regularly scheduled meeting and is expected to take action on a resolution making masks optional beginning May 25.

A resolution is necessary because the school district is being awarded $86 million in COVID-19 relief aid from the federal government. Those funds, which will be used to help Spring Branch ISD students recover from learning loss that occurred during the pandemic, are tied to several requirements, including following federal health and safety protocols which currently recommend masks be worn in schools. Therefore, the school board must vote on any change in the mask requirements before such a change is put into effect. Without board action on a resolution, the district could lose the $86 million so desperately needed to educate the children of Spring Branch ISD.

No action regarding mask requirements at Spring Branch ISD will be taken before May 24. Current mask requirements will remain in effect until the board takes action on Monday, May 24.
