For the third year in a row, the Stratford High School Student Council has earned the Sweepstakes Award from the Texas Association of Student Councils. This is the highest honor that can be awarded to schools in the state who are registered members of the Association.

Under the leadership of president Connor Able, the 150 elected student representatives and 16 officers of the Stratford Student Council organized more than 50 events and volunteer opportunities throughout the 2020-21 school year. The award-winning council is organized under the sponsorship and guidance of Stratford teacher, Mary Jackson.

This spring, the Stratford Student Council Executive Board prepared a 70-page packet for entry in the state competition, reporting on projects completed this school year. The group won awards in the following categories, which resulted in the Sweepstakes award:

•    Community Service
•    Drugs, Alcohol, Safety and Health (DASH)
•    Energy and Environment
•    Pride and Patriotism
•    Outstanding Section

Due to COVID-19 safety measures, the Stratford Student Council focused on physical donations this year because traditional large-group student events were not possible. Coordinated by their student council champions, Stratford students donated more than $10,000 in goods to the community. This accounted for 15 percent of all donations made by schools in the state organization’s District 13 (Greater Houston Area).

Not included for consideration in the state award packet was a recent one-week canned goods drive that netted nearly 41,000 items that were donated to Star of Hope and the East Spring Branch Food Bank.

“It is frequently said in student council that if something happened around the school, the student council was probably involved in it some way,” Able said.
