Every piece in place: SBISD’s team effort to ready classrooms for Every Child

Step into any of the six middle schools in Spring Branch ISD (SBISD) this summer, and you’ll find a scene of organized chaos — a maze of boxes, parts and furniture waiting to be assembled.

What looks like a giant jigsaw puzzle is actually the final stage of a months-long effort to modernize classrooms and transform learning spaces across the district.

Funded by the 2017 Bond Program, the SBISD team is replacing furniture in 245 classrooms across six campuses: Memorial, Spring Forest, Northbrook, Spring Oaks, Spring Branch and Spring Woods middle schools. This initiative goes far beyond updating furniture — it’s about creating flexible, collaborative and student-centered environments that support the success of Every Child.

Behind the scenes, the scope and complexity of this work are significant. Over a six-week span during summer break, crews removed 22 truckloads of decommissioned furniture and installed more than 16,000 new pieces. Coordinating removals, cleaning, deliveries, assembly, inspections and final adjustments across six campuses required precision planning and deep collaboration across multiple departments.

“This process is a powerful example of Collaborative Spirit in action,” said Travis T. Stanford, associate superintendent of operations. “It’s all backward-engineered to ensure a successful start to the school year. From custodial and decommissioning to delivery and installation, every team plays a vital role in making sure classrooms are ready to receive furniture on schedule — and most importantly, ready to welcome students on day one.”

Planning for the replacement project began in October 2024, with orders placed in January 2025. Decommissioning took place between May 29 and June 9. Installation began June 16 and is on track to be completed by July 30 — slightly extended due to renovations at Spring Woods Middle School. In total, the project will span 10 months from initial planning to final placement.

“It’s been exciting to watch come to life,” said Gerald McCall, Furniture, Fixtures and Equipment (FF&E) Project Manager. “Seeing the vision for modern, flexible learning spaces take shape in classrooms across the district is incredibly rewarding.”

This accomplishment is made possible by the commitment and countless hours contributed by SBISD support staff — from the FF&E Project Manager coordinating every step to the custodial teams preparing each classroom. Their behind-the-scenes work ensures that each space is clean, functional and ready for instruction.
