Three Spring Branch ISD Club Water Polo teams have qualified to compete at the Texas Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association Girls and Boys Water Polo State Championships that begin this weekend.
The top four teams in the state’s four regions qualify to compete in the girls and boys tournaments. Water polo is currently a club sport at the high school level in Texas, but it has been approved as a UIL sport, with competition beginning in the fall of 2022.
The Memorial High School Girls team finished second at the Girls East Regional tournament and will compete in Lewisville on Friday, May 7, at 10 a.m. vs. Southlake Carroll. Team members Shannon Tyler and Tessa Welch were selected as First Team All-Region.
The Memorial Boys Water Polo team won the Boys East Regional Championship to qualify for state when they defeated Strake Jesuit 7-4. It is the first time in school history that the Boy’s Water Polo team has won the regional championship. The Mustangs will compete at the state championships on Friday, May 14, at the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD Natatorium at 11 a.m. against Southlake Carroll. Team members Drew Schachel and Mason Welch were named First Team All-Region.
The Stratford Boys Water Polo team also qualified for the state tournament, finishing third at Boys East Regionals. They will compete at the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD Natatorium at 8 a.m. Friday, May 14, against Flower Mound. Team members Jonathon Horton and Charlie Williams were named 2nd Team All-Region.
