Tigers dominate district meet, advance to Regionals

The Spring Woods High School boys’ cross country team captured back-to-back district championships this season, showcasing outstanding depth and determination.

Frank Miranda led the way with a first-place finish, followed closely by Joe Miranda in second place and Elijah Banks in third, securing a clean sweep of the top three spots.

The girls’ team also impressed, earning third place overall and advancing to regionals after a strong team performance marked by grit and consistency across the lineup.

Together, both teams continue to raise the bar for excellence in Tiger athletics, representing Spring Woods with pride and competitive spirit.

For Head Boys and Girls Cross Country Coach Johnny Guajardo, the 2025 season at Spring Woods High School (SWHS) was about experience, consistency, and peaking at the right time.

“With three returning seniors on the boys’ side who’ve already run at regionals, we’ve got leadership and experience in place,” Guajardo said. “Our goal was to go back-to-back with a district championship.”

Building endurance and timing

The Tigers had a strong summer of training, logging over 40 days of practice in June and July.

“The kids put in the work this summer,” Guajardo explained. “Last year, I felt like we peaked at district. This year, we focused on peaking at regionals so we can take that next step.”

That shift in mindset, pacing the season and training with long-term goals in mind, gave the squad a sharper edge heading into fall competition.

Goals for the season

On the boys’ side, Guajardo believed his team has the depth and drive to contend at regionals.

“Last year we gained valuable experience running at regionals,” he said. “This year, our realistic shot was to finish in the top four.”

For the girls, the summer training base set a strong foundation. “They’ve put in great work, and we were excited to see how they competed once the postseason came around,” Guajardo added.

Runners to watch

The Tigers return several athletes:

  • Frank Miranda, Sr. – Team captain and top runner

  • Joe Miranda, Jr. – Younger brother of Frank, whose consistency and growth have made him a key piece of the lineup.

“Frank has the talent to compete at the highest level,” Guajardo said. “But beyond that, he’s a captain who motivates teammates and leads by example.”

Looking ahead

“These kids have bought into the process,” Guajardo said. “We’ve built a strong culture, and it’s about executing and finishing strong.”
