Turning the Tassel: Cate Yarrow embarks on new adventure at Auburn University

A 2025 graduate of Memorial High School (MHS) in Spring Branch Independent School District (SBISD), Cate Yarrow traded in her Mustang red and white for Auburn orange and blue to begin her college journey at Auburn University in Alabama.

Leaving home for college was a definite leap of faith for Cate; her support system, including her family and friends, was miles away. But she quickly discovered that everyone around her was in the same boat, so she took on the challenge with an open mind and soon began feeling right at home, thanks in part to her experience in SBISD.

“When I started high school, I struggled with how to balance grades, friends, and finding purpose,” said Cate. “Going to school in SBISD taught me that while maintaining good grades matters, getting involved is just as essential because it helps you find your niche, which ultimately allows you to grow and succeed in anything you set out to do.”

At (MHS), Cate immersed herself in various activities, including field hockey, soccer, and broadcasting. She says that along the way, she learned the importance of being adaptable, a Core Characteristic of a Spring Branch ISD T-2-4 Graduate. She also gained an understanding of why it’s vital to take risks.

Her experience also reflects SBISD’s guiding theme, Every Child. Every Way. Every Minute. Every Day., demonstrating a commitment to helping all students develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed beyond high school.

“Memorial prepared me not only academically but socially as well,” said Cate. “The teachers and staff taught me to seek out the things I enjoy, and through that, I was able to find my people and purpose.”

She took these lessons to Auburn, and despite the initial chaos that comes with being a college freshman, she quickly found her way, seeking out extracurricular activities, including joining a sorority.

“Rushing a sorority was one of the best experiences I could have hoped for,” said Cate.

“At first, I was nervous and uneasy about what it might involve, but I leaned on the confidence, resilience, and adaptability I developed during my time as a student at Memorial. Those skills helped me push past the uncertainty, stay true to myself, and connect with others in meaningful ways. Because of that, I’ve found a community filled with incredible friends and connections I don’t think I would have discovered otherwise.”

Reflecting on her journey, Cate says college seemed like a distant dream, but now that she’s living it, she’s excited for what is to come.

“There have already been so many fruitful opportunities, and I can’t wait to see what is next,” she said.

Thanks to her experience in SBISD, she feels confident about stepping out and trying new things, which will not only help her prepare for the future but also help her live fully in the moment. She knows the lessons gained will stay with her far beyond Auburn, and with each new opportunity, she will move forward, prepared to grow, lead, and thrive wherever the road takes her.
