Trustees met in the Stratford High School auditorium.
Trustees first met in executive session to discuss routine personnel and other personnel items and the superintendent’s evaluation. Trustees unanimously approved (6-0; Trustee Carter Breed was not at the workshop) routine personnel items.
FY 2020 Budget Calendar
Trustees unanimously approved the budget calendar for fiscal year 2020 (the 2019-20 school year). Associate Superintendent for Finance Karen Wilson told Trustees that “yes, we just passed (a budget) and yes, we’re working on another one.” She said there were some changes because of the legislative session next spring but the process concludes with a public hearing in both May and June 2019, with approval in June 2019.

District Data Dashboard
Trustees discussed data dashboards – graphical representations of selected data points – for district and campus data, and for internal use. Trustees generally felt that a draft document of district academic data was incomplete without demographic, financial and other common data included. Several trustees wondered aloud about the whether the dashboard’s purpose is to inform the community or to market the district. Trustees will review other documents, including a district data dashboard, including a sample campus district dashboard and a district profile, as they continue to work on this project. SBISD has a dynamic data dashboard, Compass, for internal use.
Campus Improvement Plans 2018-19
Trustees heard a presentation on Campus Improvement Plans (CIP). Community Superintendent Jennifer Parker said that the plans are required by board policy but provide a way for campuses to focus on improvement in the district’s multiple measures. Community Superintendent D’Andre Weaver said that the work on CIPs begins during the second semester through collaborating about data and other input.

Hurricane Harvey Updates
Trustees listened as senior staff recalled the work of their divisions before and after Hurricane Harvey. The Tuesday meeting, in fact, was held at Stratford High School to commemorate the anniversary of the storm.
The district used the Friday before the storm to “waterproof” facilities as much as possible, resulting in minimal water damage to district buildings. Divisions worked together in the aftermath to identify and find displaced families and staff and begin offering help and services. As Hurricane Florence bore down on the Carolina coastline, Community Relations Officer Linda Buchman told trustees that through a national professional group, SBISD’s emergency communications are being offered to schools in the affected areas. Board President Josef Klam said that he appreciated Dr. Muri’s and former Board President Karen Peck leadership through the aftermath of Harvey.
Dr. Muri closed the meeting by thanking Community Superintendent D’Andre Weaver for his service and wishing him well as he heads to DeSoto to become superintendent of DeSoto ISD.
The next meeting of the Spring Branch ISD Board of Trustees will be Monday, Sept. 27, 2019, at 7 p.m. at the Wayne F. Schaper Sr. Leadership Center, 955 Campbell.
