Tips for students for a successful job fair
Before the fair
- Create a resume that you would be comfortable sharing with potential employers. For help, check out the resume builder in Naviance. Be sure to include certifications you have earned/will earn before graduating.
- Research the companies that will be attending and plan which tables you want to stop by.
- Develop and practice a short (1 minute) introduction of yourself. Include any skills, certifications, or experience you may have.
- Practice how you might answer typical questions that could be asked:
- What brings you here today?
- What type of work are you looking for?
- Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
- Prepare a couple of questions that you would like to ask a potential employer.
- What does a typical day look like?
- What are the characteristics of your most successful employees?
- What types of opportunities are there for additional training and advancement?
- Decide what you will wear on the day of the job fair. Make sure you are wearing something that is neat and tidy. Avoid t-shirts, jeans with holes, and flip flops. Male students should consider wearing slacks or nice jeans, a shirt with a collar, and appropriate, closed-toe shoes. Female students should consider wearing slacks/skirt or nice jeans, and clothing that is not too revealing or tight.
At the fair
- Come prepared with copies of your resume, a notebook and a pen.
- Look the potential employers in the eye and greet them with a firm handshake, and share your prepared 1 minute introduction of yourself.
- Listen attentively and ask the follow up questions you have prepared.
- You may only have a couple of minutes with each potential employer so make the most of your time with them to make a great first impression.
- Take a business card from the companies that interest you most so that you can follow up.
After the fair
- Follow up with the companies that interest you via email. Be sure your email is professional, concise, and that you have used proper grammar. Make sure your email address is professional as well- you may want to set up a new one that is concise and appropriate for professional communication.
