When Demond Stafford arrived at Northbrook High School (NHS), he talked about building something — a new culture and a new standard built on accountability, trust, discipline and commitment.
Two years later, that vision is producing historic results.
In 2024, Northbrook football was establishing a new identity. Despite finishing 2-8, the Raiders had taken meaningful steps forward, including their best start in 17 years.
Stafford, who also serves as Northbrook’s campus athletic director, emphasized that the foundation being built would extend well beyond the football field.
“We are building something special here,” Stafford said at the time. “Every challenge we faced was a step forward, and we are just getting started.”
For Stafford, building a successful football program has always meant developing successful young men. The lessons of competition, discipline, resilience and teamwork are intended to carry into the classroom, future careers and life beyond high school — a philosophy that closely reflects Spring Branch ISD’s T-2-4 vision of preparing every student for a meaningful path after graduation.
That mindset is now showing up on the football field.
Northbrook opened its 2026 season by snapping a 59-game district losing streak, a drought that had lasted nine seasons and 3,233 days. The Raiders rallied from a 26-14 fourth-quarter deficit to defeat Sharpstown 29-26.
“During my tenure at Northbrook, we have worked to develop a resilient, tough people win mindset,” Stafford said. “In the Sharpstown game, that program pillar was on full display.”
The victory gave Northbrook its first district win in nine seasons and provided a tangible example of the resilience Stafford has emphasized since taking over the program.
The momentum has continued.
In Week 3, Northbrook was named the 5A Team of the Week following its victory over Sharpstown. In Week 4, the Raiders added another memorable chapter with a homecoming victory over Houston Chavez, giving the school and community another opportunity to celebrate the progress of the program.
Now, in Week 5, Stafford received the Houston Texans Coach of the Week award.
The recognition comes at a fitting point in the program’s evolution. What began in 2024 as a commitment to establish a culture built around character, accountability and perseverance is now producing moments that Northbrook players, families and the community can celebrate.
For Stafford, the wins are meaningful because of what they represent: young people learning to respond to adversity, trust one another, compete with purpose and understand that the habits they develop today can shape what comes next.
