As the summer heat begins to fade, Memorial High School's campus is abuzz with the excitement of Homecoming Week. For many, it’s an opportunity to relive old memories and reconnect with the community that shaped them. For Lindley Amarantos, a former student turned staff member, this year’s celebrations are particularly meaningful.

Amarantos, who graduated from Memorial High School in 1999, feels a deep sense of nostalgia as she walks through the familiar halls. The energy of Homecoming Week floods her with memories from her own high school days. “The friendships I built during those four years are truly special,” Amarantos recalls. “Our soccer team, in particular, was like family. The seven of us who played together all four years are still incredibly close. Two of them are even my children’s godparents.”

These lasting friendships were among the highlights of Amarantos’s high school experience. Her coaches, Kim York and Beth Gammill, also played pivotal roles in her life. “They didn’t just teach us about soccer or volleyball; they invested in us as individuals. Their support and encouragement made a huge difference, and it’s something I try to carry forward in my own role here.”

As a staff member, Amarantos is deeply involved in the Homecoming festivities. “Homecoming is a celebration of both past and present,” she says with a smile. “It’s a chance for alumni to reconnect with old friends and relive their high school days, while current students enjoy the traditions that make this time of year special.”

This year, the celebrations are infused with a sense of community pride, captured in the theme #SBISDProud. Amarantos is particularly proud of how the school works to make everyone feel included and valued. “We know everyone’s experience is different, and we do our best to respect that while fostering a sense of belonging.”

For Amarantos, Homecoming isn’t just about the festivities; it’s about the connections and memories that are made. “I hope current students see Homecoming as a chance to bond with their peers, represent their school with pride, and feel a connection to the larger Mustang community—past and present.”

Looking back, Amarantos values the legacy of Memorial High School. “In one word, I’d describe it as ‘relationships.’ The strong academic foundation, combined with lasting connections, has paved the way for many of us. Being part of that legacy, both as a graduate and as a staff member, is incredibly fulfilling.”

Despite changes over the years—such as increased academic demands and evolving Homecoming traditions—Amarantos finds comfort in the aspects that have remained the same. “The excitement and anticipation of Homecoming Week are still as palpable as ever. The tradition of mums and garters has only gotten grander, which is wonderful to see.”

Looking to the future, Amarantos hopes the school community continues to celebrate the small moments. “I hope we don’t get too caught up in the hard work and challenges of life. It’s the relationships and experiences from high school that shape us, and we should remember to celebrate those moments along the way.”

As the Homecoming festivities continue, Lindley Amarantos stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Memorial High School. She not only cherishes her own memories but is dedicated to ensuring that current and future Mustangs have their own unforgettable experiences.
