Imagine the rich tones of a cello enveloping you, its resonance lingering as the bow glides across the strings. Surrounding notes from a nearby orchestra blend seamlessly with the cellist’s performance, creating a harmonious experience for both the brain and senses.
This is what Memorial Middle School (MMS) eighth grader and cellist Sunny Seok experiences as a member of the school’s chamber orchestra, a more intimate ensemble compared to a full orchestra.
“I enjoy how immersive it is,” Seok said. “Whether it’s rhythms or tone quality, there’s always something to think about, which keeps my brain actively engaged.”
Cooperation with Others
Seok’s passion for the fine arts began at a young age, inspiring him to learn the cello and to collaborate with others who share similar interests.
At MMS, orchestra directors Bethany Prindle and Kevin Ray describe Seok as an outstanding student and leader with a great sense of humor and a love for challenges.
“He works hard on any piece of music we give him—the harder it is, the more he enjoys it!” Prindle and Ray said in a joint statement. “He has consistently demonstrated the ability to both lead and follow.”
Seok has grown both personally and musically during his time as a cellist, earning several accolades. He credits his success to the guidance and encouragement of his mentors.
“My mentors have always encouraged me to be the best I can be,” Seok said. “Without their advice and guidance, I would not be the person I am today.”
Seok frequently performs solos at MMS orchestra concerts and was selected for the Region Honors Orchestra in both sixth and seventh grades.
“I specifically loved playing the cello solo for one of our pieces in seventh grade,” Seok said. “It felt amazing to express my abilities through music and to have my fellow musicians supporting me.”
A Leader Among His Peers
Through his involvement in the orchestra, Seok has developed several Core Characteristics identified by Spring Branch ISD as essential for long-term success. He exemplifies traits such as being a communicator and collaborator, ethical and service-minded, empathetic and self-aware, as well as persistent and adaptable.
“Through orchestra, I feel that I have acquired leadership skills,” Seok said. “It has really helped me learn how to lead a group toward success.”
Next year, Seok plans to continue his musical journey as a cellist in the Memorial High School orchestra. His middle school directors look forward to following his future achievements and reflect fondly on the pleasure of guiding such a dedicated student.
“Sunny is a real pleasure to teach, and we are very proud of him!” they said.
