They say that when you are in a large organization—like a high school with more than 2,500 students—you should find a smaller group to join to make friends and grow personally.
That is exactly what sophomore Yahir Orozco has done by joining the Raider Band during his time at Northbrook High School (NHS) in Spring Branch ISD (SBISD).
“What inspired me to participate and continue with the Northbrook High School band is the culture and sense of community that you get when you participate in the band,” Orozco said.
Many Drums
He began playing the snare drum in seventh grade and has progressed to learning the nuances of the tenor drum this year.
“In the band, he is a member of the percussion section and has excelled at playing the snare drum, melodic percussion, and now has mastered the tenor line,” said Marc Ward, NHS band director. “Yahir puts in countless hours working to improve his craft.”
Admirable Traits
During Orozco’s high school journey, he has exhibited many admirable qualities. Ward describes this hard-working and talented student as respectful, selfless, intelligent, focused, and determined.
“He is a true team player who willingly accepts new tasks and challenges and proves every time that he is the best for the job,” Ward said.
This outstanding musician credits the band director for inspiring him to expand his drum repertoire and for providing a safe space to try new things.
“Mr. Ward has definitely helped and inspired me to do my best in the band room every single day,” Orozco said. “He has brought out the school spirit in us and has been direct and honest with us every step of the way.”
Collaboration Is Key
Orozco feels that being part of the band is helping him develop the Core Characteristic of being a communicator and collaborator. As identified by the SBISD community, this is one of six essential characteristics students need to be successful graduates and solid members of the community.
“This is because in band you need to coordinate and collaborate with everyone else to make a piece of music,” he said. “You need to know when your part is and how it fits with everyone else's parts. You also need to communicate with others when you are confused or need help.”
The Heartbeat of School Spirit
Orozco especially enjoys performing in the band at pep rallies and football games. He and the Raider Band community provide enthusiasm and energy to build school spirit. The upbeat rhythm of the drums is at the core of the band’s contribution to the positive momentum of the fans and athletes.
“Participating in the pep rallies, playing at the football games, and the energy and excitement you get from being there—all of it makes it great,” Orozco said.
He recalls the first time he played at a game, noting some anxious moments. “I was really nervous but still pulled through and ended up enjoying myself,” Orozco said.
Ward has confidence in and praise for Orozco. “He is the ideal band member and a great representation of the Northbrook High School Raider Band,” the band director said.
Music Now and Later
The next time you hear the NHS band rumble and start up a rousing song, know there is a team player named Yahir Orozco in the mix, helping to move your heart to beat along with the music.
While this talented sophomore still has a few more years to enjoy being in the Raider Band community, he plans to continue playing the drums or being involved in music performance in some capacity after graduation.
“My goals after high school are to continue my education, graduate, and make my parents proud,” Orozco said.
