For Debbie Garcia Gomez Gilbert, determination and opportunity intersected at just the right time. The Northbrook High School (NHS) senior is well on her way to pursuing her dream of attending medical school, an achievement that carries even a deeper meaning as a first-generation college student originally from Mexico.
Gilbert’s path has been shaped by Spring Branch Independent School District’s (SBISD) initiatives, particularly the school's RISE College Academy, which has enabled her to complete high school classes while earning college credit at Houston City College. In May, she will be among 44 students to graduate from the inaugural cohort.
“Participating in the cohort changed my path significantly, opening a world of opportunities I wouldn’t have otherwise had," said Gilbert. “It’s taught me a lot about time management and helped me better prioritize.”
As a cohort participant, she not only learned time management but would say she mastered it. While managing her busy class schedule, she also held a job and stayed involved on campus through various extracurricular activities, including the National Honor Society, science club, student council, and University Scholastic League (UIL).
“The structure of the program allows you to get a taste of college, while not losing out on the high school experience,” she said.
She also mentioned that the RISE Cohort program has improved her soft skills, communication, and leadership abilities, which she strongly believes will benefit her in college and beyond.
The program has also helped her successfully navigate financial aid and the college application process.
As she looks forward to graduating in May, she’s also eager to start her freshman year at Stephen F. Austin University, where she plans to major in pre-medicine.
“I’m excited about my next chapter, and not sure if I would have made it here without the support of SBISD and the RISE Cohort Program,” Gilbert said.
With big dreams and perseverance, she is grateful for the opportunities that continue to propel her forward to achieve great things.
