Spring Branch ISD (SBISD) officially launched its new UT Thrive Mentorship Program partnership this week, marking another important step in the district's commitment to recruiting, developing, and retaining exceptional educators.
Developed by the University of Texas at Austin College of Education, UT Thrive is designed to support early-career teachers through structured mentorship with experienced educators. The program focuses on strengthening teacher retention by fostering professional growth, collaborative learning, and meaningful support during the critical first years of teaching.
While SBISD has long provided mentoring and support for new teachers, district leaders see the UT Thrive partnership as an opportunity to deepen those efforts and further strengthen the support network available to emerging educators.
"Teachers shouldn't have to carry the weight of the profession alone. The key to retention is not demanding greater resilience from educators, but building strong systems of support, mentorship, and collaborative care that empower them to succeed," said Dr. Bryan Williams, Associate Superintendent for Talent and Administration.
Dr. Jennifer Blaine, Superintendent of Schools, said the district's investment in teacher development is directly connected to student and school success.
"Our teachers are at the heart of every success we celebrate in SBISD. The recent recognition of our district as a District on the Rise reflects years of intentional investment in our educators, their professional growth, and the instructional practices that drive student achievement. Programs like UT Thrive strengthen that commitment by ensuring our newest teachers receive the support, mentorship, and encouragement they need to grow and thrive. When we invest in teachers and schools, we invest in the success of every student," said Blaine.
Research consistently shows that educators who receive high-quality mentorship and ongoing professional support are more likely to remain in the profession, grow in their practice, and positively impact student learning. Through UT Thrive, participating teachers will have access to experienced mentors who can provide guidance, encouragement, and practical strategies as they navigate the early stages of their careers.
The new partnership complements, but is distinct from, SBISD's longstanding THRIVE "Grow Your Own" Program. For several years, the district's THRIVE initiative has helped current employees, including paraprofessionals, support staff, and cafeteria workers, earn teacher certification and transition into classroom teaching roles.
By investing in individuals who already know and love the SBISD community, the district has created a sustainable pipeline of dedicated educators while helping address ongoing workforce needs. The addition of UT Thrive ensures that these newly certified teachers, along with other early-career educators across the district, receive enhanced mentorship and support as they build successful careers in the classroom.
The new partnership also strengthens SBISD's efforts to attract and retain highly qualified new educators by providing a comprehensive framework of professional support from the moment they enter the profession.
District leaders expressed gratitude to the campus leaders participating in the inaugural UT Thrive cohort.
