For more than 50 years, a relatively nondescript building on Hammerly Road was home to something pretty special.
Unless you took a class there, had a student enrolled in a program or worked in Spring Branch ISD (SBISD), you might have driven by without knowing much about what was happening inside. But generations of students knew.
The Guthrie Center was a place to explore an interest, discover a talent and learn from career professionals excited to share their expertise and passion with students. For some, it was a class unlike anything else in their school day. For others, it was where an interest began to look like a future. Today, you cannot miss it.
The new Guthrie Center is bold, modern and purpose-built for what Career and Technical Education (CTE) has become. And just as the building has gone next level, so has the experience inside.
What made Guthrie special remains: exceptional educators, hands-on learning and opportunities for students to discover what they can do. What has changed is the scale, sophistication and reach of that experience.
Students are learning in spaces designed to reflect the industries they may one day enter, with state-of-the-art medical and dental equipment, a full automotive service center, professional cosmetology and barbering spaces, construction, architecture, an on-site bistro with a commercial kitchen built for real-world food service and much, much more.
These are spaces where students can do more than learn about a profession. They can experience the work, use industry-aligned equipment, solve real problems and begin developing the skills and confidence to succeed beyond high school.
Bigger than a building
The Guthrie Center may be the most visible new symbol of CTE in SBISD, but the story is much bigger than one building.
CTE learning happens across the district, with opportunities available at every SBISD middle and high school. Students can begin exploring interests and career pathways early and continue building their skills as they move through high school.
And students are taking advantage of those opportunities. More than 80 percent of SBISD secondary students take at least one CTE course.
That level of participation is a reflection of the power of SBISD’s T-2-4 vision, established more than a decade ago to ensure every student graduates prepared to successfully complete a technical certification or military training, a two-year degree or a four-year degree.
CTE puts that vision into practice. Students have opportunities to explore careers, discover their strengths, build industry-relevant skills and gain real-world experience that helps them see what is possible and make informed decisions about their future.
The Guthrie Center represents the next chapter in that commitment, creating more opportunities for students to discover what they can do, explore what comes next and gain the real-world experiences that prepare them for the future.
Serving students from across SBISD, the center provides access to advanced coursework, specialized equipment and industry-aligned learning that cannot easily be replicated at every campus.
Together with the SBISD Agricultural Science Center, which opened its doors with updated and expanded spaces and programming last year as part of the 2022 Bond Program, the Guthrie Center represents a significant community investment in making sure students are future-ready.
But the true return on that investment is not measured in buildings or equipment. It is measured in what students get to experience, learn and accomplish inside them.
Where learning becomes experience
That next level of learning is taking shape through Guthrie Enterprise Services, an expanding model that puts students' skills to work for real customers and gives the community a direct role in their learning.
Students will take orders, serve clients, manage deadlines, solve problems and experience what it means to deliver quality work for someone else. At the Ag Science Center, that is already happening through floral design and pet grooming services available to SBISD staff, families and community members at a reduced cost. Floral Design students are currently taking orders for fall plants and floral subscriptions.

This spring, even more doors will open. Barbering and cosmetology students will begin welcoming clients for salon services at the Guthrie Center, while the student-operated bistro will give culinary arts and hospitality students experience preparing food and serving real guests. In the future,
Guthrie Enterprise Services are expected to expand to include select automotive services in the 2027-2028 academic school year.
A haircut, meal, floral arrangement or pet grooming appointment may be what brings someone through the door, but the learning behind each service is much bigger. These are experiences a textbook cannot replicate. Students are learning to communicate with customers, manage time and resources, solve problems, build trust and deliver a quality product or service.
An investment that comes back to the community
The new Guthrie Center and Ag Science Center were made possible through the SBISD 2022 Bond Program, providing modern facilities, industry-aligned equipment and new opportunities for students across the district.
But perhaps one of the most exciting parts of this investment is that its impact extends beyond the students using these facilities today.
When a community member purchases a student-created floral arrangement, schedules a service or eventually sits down for a meal prepared and served by students, that person becomes part of the learning experience.
Our students gain real-world experience by serving their community. Our community gains access to their growing talents. And together, we are helping develop the skilled professionals, entrepreneurs and workforce of tomorrow.
