Hayes in the classroom

Jeanie Haynes’ path to teaching sixth-grade math at Memorial Middle School (MMS) began in a Spring Branch ISD (SBISD) classroom.

As a student at MMS, Haynes found inspiration in calculus teacher Phil Harter. His approach helped her see math in a new way and showed her the impact a teacher could have.

“He helped me see it as more than just numbers and formulas,” Haynes said. “His enthusiasm, encouragement and dedication to his students inspired me to pursue teaching.”

Haynes began her teaching career in 2019, teaching seventh- and eighth-grade math in Cy-Fair and Katy. She knew she wanted to return to the district where she had grown up and attended school. For the past four years, she has taught sixth-grade math in SBISD.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to give back to the community that helped shape my education and to make a positive difference in the lives of my students,” she said.

At MMS, Haynes has strengthened her teaching practices and grown more confident through collaboration with colleagues. She also served as a co-sponsor of the National Junior Honor Society, supporting students as they develop leadership and character.

“The support I have received from my team, colleagues and administrators has given me the confidence to continue growing and discovering new ways to make an impact on students both inside and outside the classroom,” she said.

As SBISD celebrates 80 years of serving students and families, Haynes sees her return as a chance to carry forward what her teachers gave her.

“For me, what’s possible in SBISD is turning a lifelong connection into a meaningful career,” Haynes said. “I have the opportunity to give back to the district that invested in me while helping my students build bright futures of their own.”
