Award-winning artwork showcases student talent and what’s possible in SBISD.
Memorial High School (MHS) student Ruyi Chanel Wei earned second place in the High School Art category of the 2026 I Am Texas writing and art contest for Thoughts of a Warrior, receiving a $500 cash prize.
Ruyi’s achievement is an example of what’s possible in SBISD, where students have opportunities to discover their interests, develop their talents and pursue excellence.
The statewide I Am Texas contest celebrates the creativity of student artists and writers in grades 2-12. In addition to Ruyi’s second-place honor, SBISD proudly recognizes two student finalists:
April Li, Memorial Middle School (MMS), for her artwork, Sunrise on the Farm
Gabriella Peppard, Stratford High School (SHS), for her short story, The Weight of a Teacup
For six consecutive years, SBISD has been named a Texas Art Education Association District of Distinction, recognizing its commitment to outstanding visual arts education. Behind that recognition are dedicated educators who encourage students to explore ideas, strengthen their skills and express their unique perspectives.
Accomplishments like Ruyi’s bring that commitment to life. Through the arts, students build confidence, creativity and critical thinking, developing skills that support their learning and prepare them for meaningful paths beyond high school.
Ruyi, April and Gabriella will have their work published in the 2026 I Am Texas Historian’s Journal, becoming part of The Bryan Museum’s permanent library collection. Finalist artwork will be featured in the museum’s Student Art Expo in Galveston from Oct. 7 through Nov. 22.
